2002 ROWDYBIKER exercise challenge
foolrules and riduculations

Historical:
In February, 2000, approximately 32 social outcasts and members of the world famous CCRiders cycle club agreed in a weak moment to participate in an exercise program that would last the balance of the year. The objective was to spend every minute of our free time exercising as much as practical, and crosstrain if possible, to improve cycling endurance and speed. (Really? YUK!)
In 2001, the program increased to 55 fools.

Points were earned for virtually any reasonable exercise unit short of napping, i.e. a mile of cycling was worth one point, a mile of running was worth one crosstraining point and so on. (Gathering points were affectionately termed "digging worms" because a taxpayer-funded study was once done on the exercise value of doing just that - digging worms). A self appointed task master, the "Grand OOMPAH of fitness (G.O.O.F. for short) guided the point program through the year, and served as deaf arbitrator for those seeking modifications to the program.

Purpose of the program:
· The purpose of our program is to encourage fitness, and to improve our cycle strength and endurance. This can take several forms, which might simply be to cycle more and harder, crosstraining for strength or endurance, or lose weight to become more fit. In the 2002 program we will reward all of these activities. Conversely, we shall penalize the wits out of you for any significant weight gain during the year. The OOMPAH giveth, and the OOMPAH taketh.

Cycling - actual cyclometer mileage, or in the case of spinning, 18 points per hour class. (same)

Running - 3 points per mile or 18 points per hour. (same)

Nordic cross-country skiing, score 18 points per hour. Hot tub time not to be included.(same)

Swimming - 18 points per hour for lap swimming. (same)

Walking - 1-1/2 points per mile, or 6 points per hour. (same)

Health Club - 12 points per hour, any exercise activity, including weight lifting, elliptical trainer, stair-step, aerobics. Don't count steam-room, locker time, water cooler breaks, but do include brief rest between "reps". (same)

Tennis - Singles scores 12 points per hour, Doubles scores 9 points per hour.(same)

Volleyball scores similar to tennis - you decide based on activity level.(same)

Windsurfing, Alpine Skiing, you must decide on your exercise level for the day. It should fall somewhere between t 6 points per hour and 9 points per hour according to the "met" equivalent chart.(same)

Rollerblading - score 12 points per hour (this is increased from 9 points in 2001)

Anything else I will refer to the GOOF for a determination.

Weight loss points:
Recognizing that as adults, it is more difficult to keep weight off, we have provided an additional incentive for those of you that are looking for a reason to lose those "love handles"------look no further.
To qualify for an annual bonus for the weight loss portion of the program, you must weigh yourself during the first and last weeks of the year. You don't need to report your actual weight to me, just keep track of it yourself. Any difference in your weight that results in MORE THAN A 5-pound loss, will earn 100 bonus points for each pound above the first 5 lost. So if you can afford to lose 15 pounds, you could receive a bonus of 1,000 points at the end of 2001. Not bad for keeping your mouth shut and not eating. Conversely, if you gain more than 5 pounds during the year, you will need to deduct 100 points per pound from your point total for all pounds over 5.

Bonus "Super-event" points:
GOOF has decided to award "bonus points" for the successful completion of certain athletic events on an "as accomplished" basis. The following bonus points are to be routinely included in your weekly totals:

20 bonus points when you cycle 100 miles or more in a single continuous event, organized or not.

60 bonus points if you do an "epic ride" consisting of 200 or more miles in one day.

10 bonus points for an organized "double spin" (2 hours continuous spinning)

20 bonus points for completion of either a marathon or half iron man triathlon.

50 bonus points for the successful completion of a full iron man. (plus you earn an additional 20 for the marathon portion and 20 more for the cycle portion).
All this is in addition to the regular swim points, the cycle points, and the run points - something like a total of 300 points for the event!

20 additional bonus points for breaking your own personal cycle distance record once during the year.

Programs available:
Given the liberal awarding of points this year, plus the bonus program, we will have the following levels for 2002:

· Rowdy 2000
· Rowdy 4000
· Rowdy 7000
· Rowdy 10k
· Kid's Summer Program

If, after the end of the first quarter, your exercise pattern shows the need for an adjustment from one program to another, we will bump you up or down accordingly.

I'll call for the results weekly, usually on Mondays via email. I'll publish the combined results on Tuesday in an excel spreadsheet via email attachment. We will have an award ceremony at the end of the program. We will work hard. We will be better for it.

This program is open to anyone, a crazy aunt or uncle, best friend, neighbor, or even your 76-year-old mother whether she cycles or not - there is no cost, only the toll on your time and your body to earn the points.
